MacNutt sits in the Rural Municipality of Churchbridge No. 211. Settlers arrived between the late 1880s and the 1910s, most of them immigrants of German origin, and the area was first known as the District of Landestreu.
In 1909 the district was renamed to honour Thomas MacNutt, who was the area's Member of the Legislative Assembly at the time. MacNutt incorporated as a village on February 22, 1913.
The village is the hometown of Duane Rupp, who played in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Minnesota North Stars and the Pittsburgh Penguins between 1963 and 1973.
